Hornets score late, take game against Cal State Bakersfield

Sacramento State scored seven runs in the eighth inning against Cal State Bakersfield Friday which broke open a tie game in Bakersfield, Calif.

The Hornets had eight batters reach base including a streak of five singles in a row in the eighth in the 10-3 victory over the Roadrunners.

All nine batters in the starting lineup had a hit, and eight of them scored runs. Senior third baseman led the way for the Hornets going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. It was Soto’s second three hit game of the season, the first coming back on April 17 against Utah Valley.

Hornets starting pitcher Brennan Leitao earned his team-leading sixth win of the season going seven innings giving up three runs and striking out five.

Leitao has won four of his last five starts.

Leading the Roadrunners was third baseman Allen Gwynn who went 1-4 with two runs scored. Relief pitcher Max Carter gave up five runs in the seventh only recording two outs.

CSUB came into the regular season as the favorites to win the Western Athletic Conference, but have not performed up to that standard. The Roadrunners are seventh in the WAC with an 8-7 record. They are 16-23 overall.

Sac State (26-16, 13-3) will play game two against CSUB, Saturday in Bakersfield. First pitch starts at 6 p.m.
