University Union offers more than food and drink

Who said that the University Union only offers food and drinks to students? The listening booth is a great place to come listen to music and relax after a stressful day at school.

For over 20 years the listening booth has been in existence and might be the only one left at a state school, Program Service Manager Norma Sanchez explains. “The listening booth was a big thing in the late 70’s at Sacramento State. We started with just records and now evolved to cd’s” -Sanchez says.

There are over 900 cd’s to choose from and over 10 categories which include: Hip-Hop, Reggae, Comedy, R&B, Classical, and Rock. 25 to 50 cd’s are purchased every semester, and suggestions of new releases from students are taken into consideration while making these purchases. Visits range from 40 to 45 people a day with the common goal, and that is to un-wind in the listening booth.

Christina Ramos, 18, who is a freshman at Sac State proclaims that students are surprised to find out how cool the listening booth is. “A lot of people don’t come to the 2nd floor, but when they do, they’re like wow! Most people like it”. This comfortable atmosphere allows students to hang out, do homework, read or even sleep in 1 of the 6 booths offered to them.

Along with listening good music, a student has a choice of playing board games or reading magazines, which is an addition to the entertainment collection for students. Students are only asked to bring their valid one card before a booth is issued to them. “It is a great place for students to relax, take a nap and lounge. It’s free, it’s fun, why not take advantage of it”, says Norma Sanchez. “There’s so much to do there”.

The listening booth is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9a.m. to 8 p.m., and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3:30p.m.
