Student who helped lead to desegregated schools speaks

Dr. Terrance Roberts, who was among the first African American students to attend a desegregated high school in Arkansas in the late fifties, will be speaking at the Multi-Cultural Center at Sacramento State today.

“He is a part of history,” said Leonard Valdez, director of the MultiCultural Center.Roberts, who is now a practicing psychologist, was one of the first nine African American high school students in 1957 who attended a desegregated high school in the face of police barricades and Gubernatorial opposition, Valdez said.

“There is a whole series of events and issues that brought us to desegregation,” Valdez said.

Roberts, who often speaks on civil rights, will be at Sac State do discuss these issues from the fifties as well as contemporary issues, Valdez said.

“He is there to share his story from a personal point of view,” Valdez said.

This free event will be held in room 1010 in the Library.

Valdez, who expects 60 to 70 people in attendance said that anyone who is interested can attend.

The event is being co-sponsored by the Multi-Cultural Center and the College of Social Science and Interdisciplinary Studies.
