The American River Courtyard is the 2019 “Best On-Campus Housing” winner in The State Hornet’s third annual Best of Sac State poll.

The AMC holds up to 606 students, but only permits sophomores and up, as well as transfer, graduate and international students, according to their website.

The AMC structure is four floors high, with studios and suites holding up to five bedrooms. One notable difference in this particular dorm is that each unit is apartment style and students get to have their own room and a kitchenette in every suite.

“I’m a transfer student and I wanted my own room. I wanted privacy,” said Bethany Griffith, a desk attendant and resident at AMC. “My brother actually lived here when he came to school here and he recommended it.”

Griffith said that as an older transfer student, she was looking to have her own space. She said she really likes that she can just go downstairs to go to work and doesn’t have to worry about driving elsewhere.

The suites at AMC all come with two bathrooms, making it easier for residents to access and have privacy.

Sophomore Julianna Murrieta said there’s a huge difference between the freshman dorms she lived in last year and the AMC, one being the bathroom accessibility.

“I used to have to cross the hall if I wanted to go to the restroom,” Murrieta said. “Luckily my room was close to it.”

AMC also provides residents with a computer lab, study room, study lounge and recreational area. Students in the residence halls also have access to a swimming pool, tennis courts and basketball courts.

“It’s clean, it’s quiet,” Griffith said. “I always recommend it because you have like an apartment. You get your own room. I love AMC, so I voted. I lived here for two years. Because I have been content, I haven’t wanted to go anywhere else.”
