Softball seniors prepare for final game at Shea Stadium

Sunday, four Sacramento State softball seniors will step on the field one last time in Hornet green at Shea Stadium.

The four seniors for Sac State include first baseman and catcher Molly Smith, infielder Lauren Blair, third baseman Emily McCormick and center fielder Kelli Frye.

Smith will not be able to play her final game as a Hornet due to a knee injury she suffered against Northern Colorado on March 23, but she said she still plans on coming to the game. Before her injury she had success on the field with a .213 batting average, hitting four home runs and nine RBIs.

Blair said she is going to leave everything on the field at Shea Stadium because it will be the last time she will wear the Hornet uniform at home.

“It will be like any other weekend this season,” Blair said, who has a career batting average of .149 with two home runs and nine RBIS. “The only difference is that I am going to have a little more fun with my team.”

All four seniors are ready to enjoy this weekend with each other and their families.

“I am looking forward to seeing my family this weekend and having fun with this game for this first time all season,” McCormick said.

McCormick has not had the year she may have wanted however, as a Hornet she has hit .324 with 18 home runs and 103 RBIs.

Strahan would like to send the seniors out this weekend on a high note even though they have already clinched a spot in the Big Sky Conference Tournament.

McCormick likes the idea of playing the conference tournament because the seniors before her did not have the chance to participate in a conference tournament before. In years past, the Pacific Coast Softball Conference never had a tournament.

Strahan and the Hornet coaching staff have enjoyed coaching these four seniors because of what they have become at Sac State.

“We have watched the seniors grow and mature into great softball players and young women ready to enter into the professional world,” Strahan said.

Senior weekend will end with the senior game on Sunday. The first pitch will be at noon.
