Junior Kercia Brakel led the Sacramento State women’s golf team to sixth place at the Wolf Pack Classic this week in Dayton, Nev.

The tournament took place on Monday and Tuesday at the Dayton Valley Golf Club and featured 10 schools from around the country. The tournament was shortened from 54 holes to 36 holes because of high winds on Monday.

The University of San Francisco came in first with a score of 598; UC Irvine lost a three-stroke first-round lead and finished at 602. The University of Nevada and the University of Wyoming tied for third at 604 followed by Stetson University at 609 and the Hornets at 618.

USF sophomore Peppiina Kaija tied Stetson junior Alex Buelow for best individual score after shooting an identical 73-70-143.

Brakel was 10th overall after shooting 77-75-152. Freshman Lexie Hall tied for 17th with a 76-78-154 and senior Julie Shutler shot a 79-76-155 for 25th overall.

Five golfers had an eagle, Kaija led the tournament with eight birdies and Nevada’s sophomore Louise Yi lead with 26 pars.

This was the Hornets’ third match of the season. Hall led the Hornets to 13th place out of 22 at the Circling Raven Invitational in Pullman, Wash., and Shutler led them to seventh out of 13 at the Cougar Cup at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Worley, Idaho.

The Hornets’ next match will be Nov. 1 at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational at the Kapolei Golf Course in O’ahu, Hawaii.
