Cross country regresses in Santa Clara

The men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished ninth at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday at Baylands Regional Park in Santa Clara.
CSU Long Beach won the overall team race with 94 points in the women’s 21-team 5k invitational. The University of Portland came in second with 100 points and Idaho State University took third place with 116 points. Sac State finished ninth with 236 points.
University of Idaho sophomore Hannah Kiser took first place after running a 16:55.3.
Junior Rachel Mitchell finished the race in 17:30.7 and finished 13th overall to lead the Hornets. Sophomore Veronica Stinnett ran a 17:57.4 for 44th place and Sophomore Lauren Mugnaini ran a 18:13.7 for 59th place.
In the women’s 5k open Cuesta College freshman Devon Kelsey took first place after running a 18:10.8.
Hornet sophomore Ashley Chavez ran a 18:42.9 for seventh place, freshman Teresa Mallory ran a 18:57.1 for 18th place and freshman
Hornet freshman Adrianna Royal took 36th place with a 19:29.0.
Stanford University took first by a landslide in the men’s 19-team 8k invitational. The Cardinal won the men’s overall team race with 38 points. Cal Poly took second with 77 points and Long Beach came in third with 153 points. Sac State finished ninth with 252 points.
In the individual standings, UC Riverside senior Chad Hall edged out Cal Poly senior Daniel Gonia and took first place. Hall ran a 23:48.0 and Gonia ran a 23:48.6.
Sophomore Cole Younger led the Hornets after running the 8k in 24:38.6 for 32nd place. Sophomore Reesey Byers came in 41st place with a 24:41.9 and Sophomore Zach Kaylor ran a 24:57.8 for 47th place.
In the men’s 8k open, Dominican University of California senior Jonathon Glocknitzer took first place with a 20:05.5.
Hornet freshman McConnell Harvey ran a 26:10.4 for 29th place, freshman Mustafa Abbas ran a 26:21.0 for 41st place and junior Luke Frazier took 78th place with a 27:14.6.
The Hornets were coming off a great race in the San Francisco State Invitational on Oct. 7. The women’s team finished second out of 13 teams and the men finished third out of 16 teams.
The ninth place finish Saturday was a step backwards for the Hornets. They will have another shot at improving their record on Oct. 29 at the Big Sky Conference Championships in Pocatello, Idaho.
