Sacramento State men’s soccer defeats San Jose State 1-0 in overtime

The Sacramento State men’s soccer team earned the fifth seed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament when it defeated San Jose State University 1-0 on Saturday in overtime in San Jose.
The win for the Hornets improves their record to 7-4-7 overall and 2-2-6 in the MPSF. As for San Jose State, its season will end in eighth place in the MPSF with a record of 7-9-3 overall and 1-6-3 in conference play.
The overtime match marked the ninth time this season that Sac State has had to go in overtime play with an opponent. However, it is just the first time all season that the team has won an overtime match that has not resulted in a tie for both teams.
It took just 1:15 into the first overtime for Sac State to find an opening against Spartan goalkeeper Jonathan Lester.
Junior forward Chris Bettencourt scored his sixth goal of the season as teammate Gabriel Silveira found the streaking Bettencourt 10 yards in front of the goal. The Hornet shot it in the ball as the San Jose ‘keeper left the goal box to defend the kick leaving the net wide open.
Sac State will host the MPSF Tournament starting on Thursday with the first match to commence at 11 a.m. The match will pit the No. 6-seed UNLV Rebels against No. 3-seed New Mexico University Lobos on Thursday morning. In the afternoon match, starting at 2 p.m., the No. 4-seeded Air Force Academy Falcons will take on No. 5-seeded Hornets. All games will take place on Hornet Soccer Field
Second round of action will continue on Friday at 11 a.m. when No. 1-seed Denver University will play the winner of the New Mexico and UNLV match.
The afternoon game will see No. 2 seed CSU Bakersfield take on the winner of the Sac State and Air Force match. Both Denver and CSU Bakersfield earned automatic byes as they each won their respective divisions within the MPSF.
