Sacramento State women’s soccer earns fourth Big Sky win
October 25, 2010
The Sacramento State women’s soccer team had to face two opponents on Sunday afternoon at Hornet field to earn their 4th Big Sky conference win of the season, as they defeated Weber State University 3-1.
With the win, the Hornets improve their record to 7-8-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the Big Sky. As for the Wildcats of Weber State, their record falls to 2-15-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the Big Sky.
It was a messy game as Mother Nature mixed constant rain fall with wind gusts of up to 15 miles per hour. During much of the game the rain was flying sidewise and turned the playing surface into a soggy puddle filled mess.
That did not stop the Hornets from scoring three times in the first half. The first goal came four minutes in as midfielder Laura Bahno scored from 25 yards out as the ball took an odd bounce off the turf and past the hands of Wildcat keeper Ryann Waldman.
The goal for Bahno was her second of the season and said there was a too much going on in front of the goal box to see how the scored as the score was first given to senior forward Leah Larot.
“When I kicked the ball there was a lot of havoc in the box area and thought Leah had deflected it in for the goal. So I was happy for Leah to get the goal,” Bahno said. “But when we came back out from the locker room for the second half, the scores table announced that I was awarded with the score and thought “Oh that’s cool’.”
Later in the first half, Sac State would score two more goals to solidify their control over the game. Both goals came from Hornet foward Elece McBride as she scored on an unassisted play at the 20:21 mark. 12 minutes later McBride was fouled from behind as she was streaking to the goal giving her a penalty kick.
McBride said the defender was playing her tight and was doing everything she could to stop her from scoring.
“I got fouled right inside the box. I tried to turn past the defender and she just kept her hand on my jersey and tripped me,” McBride said.
Head coach Randy Dedini said that the game was just another chance for the team to get past bumps in their schedule as they prepare to go on the road to Portland State University and make a final push for the Big Sky playoffs.
“They have worked extremely hard to put themselves in this situation. We learned a lot of hard lessons during our non-conference portion of our season,” Dedini said. “So a day like this showed that they were mentally ready even though the weather was completely horrible, the field was very tough to play on and we had to change the way we played from a possession style to a more direct style of play.”
Sac State will be in action at 4 p.m. this Friday as they travel to Portland State.
