March 14, 2010
The Sacramento State softball team competed in the Mustang Softball Classic this weekend, on the campus of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
In the three-day tournament, the Hornets played in five games, two against Cal Poly, one versus UC Santa Barbra, and two versus Iowa State.
Sac State finished the tournament with two wins and three losses, good for third place.
On day one, the Hornets split their first two games by losing first to host Cal Poly 3-2 and then beating UCSB 5-2. The game with the Gauchos ended in five innings due to fading sunlight.
In the game against UCSB, the Hornets scored three unanswered runs in the first two innings, while shutting down the Gauchos in the process. In the bottom of the first, Kelli Frye walked with one out, giving Jessica Abelia a chance to advance a runner into scoring position.
In the top of third inning, the Gauchos made life a little more difficult for Hornet starter Megan Schaefer, scoring two run on four hits. However, the Hornets quickly answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
After the third inning, Megan Schaefer was able to contain the Gauchos until the game ended in the fifth due to darkness.
Schaefer earned her third win of the season, going five innings, giving up eight hits, two earned runs, while walking two and striking out one. For the Gauchos, Correa earned her fifth loss of season, going 4 innings, giving up six hits and five earned runs, on five walks and three strikeouts.
On day two the Hornets had similar outcomes in their games. The Hornets dropped their first game of the day to Cal Poly 3-0 before bounced back in the second game against the Iowa State Cyclones. Sac State would score four runs to win the game 4-1.
In the win, first year Hornet Smith hit her first career home run in the fourth inning off of Iowa State starter Tori Torrescano.
Hornet starter Shelby Voelz earned her third win of the season, going seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits, striking out four and walking two batters. Cyclone pitcher Torrescano got the loss, running her record to one win on three losses.
Sac State would end the Mustang Tournament with a loss on the final day of action. The Cyclones would exact their revenge for the previous day’s loss, as they were able to make up an early deficit to win the game 4-3.
Sac State returns home Thursday to play Colorado State in a one game set. Friday, they host the 18th annual Capital Classic, as they welcome Colorado State, Utah State, and Iona University.
