Critical review: Urban Works showcases dancers

Iulia Bodeanu

The exuberance and dynamism of the Sacramento/Black Art of Dance (S/BAD) show, Urban Works: African Creative Expressions, was palpable as a troop of dancers performed on Sunday in the intimate space of Solano Hall. The showcase of modern dance and spoken word by Terry Moore added to the diversity of mediums that emoted the urban experience.

In “Lost But Not Forgotten,” Sheila Coleman and Nathan Jones performed a partner piece in two parts. The first was a sensual and emotionally tormented dance that was progressive in its contortion and outstretched movements, with point and counterpoint motions that played well off each other. The figures of the dancers were silhouetted against a deep red background, which added and highlighted the tension of the male/female dichotomy.

The second part was a more traditional modern dance dynamic where the movements of the two dancers paralleled each other in outstretched arms and tension and release as well as in the lyrical expression of Lionel Richie’s “Jesus is Love.” This was an overall uplifting and energetic performance by the duo.

Not to be outdone in the energy department, the partner collaboration of Valerie Gnassounou and Miyo of the Celebration Arts Dance Company was more abstract in content and choice of angular movements and music, but their creation of bodily tension between the two purple leotard-clad dancers was also visible in their bodies as well as facial expressions. Both were visibly in sync physically and emotionally.

The final group piece was characteristic of the show in the vibrant colors and play with form and aggressive attitude that brought to life an animated rainbow of costumes and figures that centered around the pairing of Coleman and Jones.

The performers engaged the audience through their youth and enthusiasm and the truly great use of lighting, costumes and dynamic dance moves. This is an eclectic modern dance show that viewers should not miss.

Performances continue at 6:30 p.m. today, 8:00 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 2:00 p.m. Sunday in Solano Hall 1010. For tickets contact the Sacramento State Ticket Office at (916) 278-4323.
