The Lions of Loyola Marymount, ranked No. 7 nationally, showed the Sacramento State men’s soccer team why they’re ranked so high on Friday.

The Lions roared through Hornet Field, leaving no doubts that they are worthy of their ranking, defeating the Hornets 5-1, while dropping Sac State’s record to 2-3-2.

The Hornets also suffered a loss to the University of Santa Barbara, 3-0, on Sunday.

Sac State’s offense was precise early on in its execution against the Lions, jumping out to a 1-0 lead.

“In the first half we took it to them, they weren’t ready,” Hornet defender Utodi Madu said.

Sophomore defender Brent Hamilton converted on the team’s only goal in the 44th minute of the first half, receiving assists from juniors David Fraser and Joel Rodriguez.

Hamilton finished the game with two shots on goal, and the lone goal.

Attempting only four shots in the first period, the Lions rhythm was delayed by a stingy Hornets defense.

“Sacramento came out and dominated the first half of play”, Lion midfielder Murriagui Andres said.

The second half of the contest was a different story, with Loyola Marymount scoring five-consecutive goals.

In the 47th minute, junior midfielder Kevin Novak converted the Lion’s first goal, which deflected off Hornet goalkeeper Jeff Gibson.

The Hornets immediately lost momentum of the game. With the Lion’s Pat Parker scoring less than a minute later on a penalty kick, the ambush was on.

Sac State played their second-consecutive game without defender Alexis Muartua, who was out with an ankle injury.

“We played our game, they played theirs. They came out on top. You have got to give it to them, they’re a good team,” Madu said.

The Lions outshot the Hornets 16-7 on the afternoon, including a 12-4 advantage in the second period.

At the University of Santa Barbara, the Hornets poor shot output continued as the Gauchos held the Hornets scoreless, with Sac State attempting only one shot.

Gene Deering took a feed from Memo Arzate, scoring the Gauchos first goal in the 51st minute.

Four minutes later, Rob Friend converted the Gaucho’s second goal of the game with a shot that deflected off Gibson.Friend later capitalized on his second goal in the 59th minute, finishing an eight-minute, three-goal barrage for the Broncos.

The Gauchos dominated the Hornets in shot attempts 19-1, including a game-high 12 corner kicks.

The loss brought Sac State’s record to 2-4-2 on the season.

The Hornets will attempt to rebound against Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, Oct.2, at 4 p.m. at Hornet Soccer Field. The Hornets will then travel to Fresno State University on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 3 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
