‘When We Were Colored: A Mother’s Story’ flips the script on Black theater narratives

Production spotlights the legacy of Sacramento’s Rutland family

“When We Were Colored: A Mother’s Story” written by Playwright Ginger Rutland is a story that focuses on the journey of a middle-class Black woman who grew up in the segregated South. The play then follows her move to Sacramento in 1952 with her family as they navigate life in a more integrated society.

In Downtown Sacramento, Cesar Chavez Plaza came to life with the echoes of popular slow jams for the very first R&B in the Park event on Sunday night and spotlighted local DJs, art, vendors, and food.
Attendees enjoy the hip hop music on the green channel provided by DJ Jay Hernandez, Sept. 5, 2024. Hernandez referred to his listeners as the “green goblins” whenever a popular song he knew listeners would like was next.
