Cool Mint Juleps to help freshen up on a warm day
April 1, 2013
After many hours in the warm sun and intense betting on the racehorses, Kentucky Derby fans refresh themselves at the races with the popular whiskey beverage called the Mint Julep.
In only two days, the track sold 120,000 Mint Julep cocktails to thirsty fans. According to kentuckyderby.com, this beverage has been the drink of the event for 18 years.
Mint Juleps are crisp, sweet and chilled, creating a refreshing beverage for those seeking to relax in the warm sun.
Thankfully, summer is just around the corner meaning this easy-to-prepare recipe will come in handy.
Mint Juleps can be prepared in batches to serve many guests at summer parties, or prepared for a smaller crowd looking to lounge and tan by the pool.
This recipe was adapted from kentuckyderby.com
Ingredients
2 cups sugar
2 cups water
6-8 fresh mint leaves
Crushed ice
Jack Daniels Whiskey
In a medium-sized pot, bring water to a boil. Stir in the sugar and let it boil for five minutes.
Put sugar water in a container with six to eight fresh mint leaves. Cover and place in the refrigerator overnight.
To prepare beverage after it has cooled, fill the cup with ice. Add one tablespoon of the mint sugar-water and two ounces of whiskey. I used Jack Daniels because I like to use the remaining liquor for Jack and Cokes, but any type of whiskey will do.
Stir quickly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup and top with a leave of fresh mint.
Relax with this cool minty drink on a warm weekend.
