Quick and easy breakfast inspired by the film ‘V for Vendetta’

Anna Puccinelli

Egg in a basket is an easy-to-make breakfast dish and is great for those who are in a hurry in the morning. This dish, which was featured in the 2005 film “V for Vendetta,” is a slice of fried bread with a hole in the center and filled with a fried egg.

In the breakfast scene from “V for Vendetta”, when V (Hugo Weaving) makes a meal for Evey (Natalie Portman), V showed us a new creative way to enjoy our eggs and toast, which has become known as “Egg in a basket”.

This breakfast, which takes ten minutes to prepare, includes protein from the eggs and the carbohydrates from the bread provide energy. Egg in a basket is a great boost to start the day.

Personalizing the recipe is easy – any type of bread may be used, such as gluten-free, wheat, sourdough or French. Vegetables or diced meat can be added into the eggs (bell peppers and broccoli are my favorite). Using only egg whites is a healthier option. Cheese such as feta or cheddar can be sprinkled on top. The options to personalize egg in a basket are endless.

Egg in a Basket

Ingredients

6 slices of whole wheat bread

6 eggs

Butter

Salt and pepper

Directions

Butter both sides of the bread.

Cut a 2-inch circle in the middle of each slice. You can use a fun shaped cookie cutter or a shot glass for this.

Preheat a nonstick cooking pan over medium heat. Place bread on pan once the pan has been heated thoroughly.

Place a little butter in the hole of the bread and crack egg in the hole.

Sprinkle eggs with salt and pepper, or use any other desired seasoning. I like chili flakes on my eggs. Garlic salt can also add a hint of garlic flavor to the eggs.

Flip the piece of bread when the egg begins to cook around the edges. Remove the pan from the heat when the eggs are cooked to your preference.

The bread cutouts from the center can be grilled and eaten so it doesn’t go to waste.
