Senior day was a sad one for the Sacramento State women’s soccer team. The Hornets came up empty handed after losing today 2-1 to Idaho State.

This game honored the seven seniors were on the Sac State team – Shelby Tomasello, Jordan Carlberg, Elece McBride, Victoria Ramirez, Christina Gomez, Jessica Castaño, Megan Burg.

“We felt like it was (a) must win game because it was our last home game,” said Sac State head coach Randy Dedini.

Sac State’s only goal came from captain midfielder Burg’s assist on a corner kick to freshman Kassidy Kellogg in the 19th minute for the Hornets’ only goal.

“It was really important to have that goal,” Kellogg said. “We came out to try and win for the seniors. That goal gave us the momentum, but two costly errors cost us the game.”

The costly errors Sac State forced upon itself was a goal slipped right by goalkeeper Tomasello at the 23rd minute and a foul inside the box, which gave Idaho State a penalty-kick goal in the 35th minute.

Tomasello gave up two goals out of four shots Idaho put on goal.

The Hornets had the advantage in shooting 13-7 with eight of those shots being on goal.

Sac State also had the advantage in corner kicks 8-1, but could convert only one. Six of those corner kicks came in the first half for the Hornets.

“It was important to get a good start and I thought we did by scoring off the corner kick,” Dedini said.

Although Carlberg was limited to a total of 66 minutes because of a nagging leg injury, the forward played a gutsy last home game as she put two shots up on goal.

“We are toward the end of the season so you just have to ignore the pain, (but) it did hurt when I turned a couple times in the game,” Carlberg said. “I try not to think of it as my senior game. You have to go out like it is not your last game on this field.”

The Hornets’ two straight losses drop them to seventh place with two games left before the Big Sky championships. One of games comes against Portland State, who is first in the Big Sky as of right now.

“We keep losing and tying teams that we totally outplay,” Dedini said. “We need to go and win at Portland State.”

The next game for Sac State is on Friday against Portland State at 1:30 p.m. The Hornets are looking to rebound from two straight losses to push them into the conference tournament.
