In an extra inning affair, the UC Irvine Anteaters defeated the Sacramento State Hornet baseball team 4-3 in 10 innings on Sunday.

The Anteaters scored first in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to take the early 1-0 lead.

However, the Hornets countered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the 3-1 lead. Junior Jake Chilton and senior Josh Powers both singled to lead off the inning, then junior Trevor Bloom followed with a RBI single plating Chilton to make the score 1-1. A throw to second base as Bloom attempted to steal caught Anteaters’ second baseman off guard and the ball sailed into center field. Powers came around to score from third as did Bloom on the throw, making the score 3-1 Hornets.

In the seventh, UC Irvine came back to score a run cutting the Hornet lead to 3-2. In the top of the ninth inning, Larson singled and then was pinch run for. Brian Hernandez then singled, moving the pinch runner Cory Olson to third base, setting up a first and third situation with two outs. Ronnie Olson singled, which scored Cory Olson from third, making the score 3-3. The Anteaters were unsuccessful in plating another run.

In the bottom-half of the inning, the Hornets came close to breaking the three-all tie. They loaded the bases, but could not bring the winning run across the plate, prompting the game into extra innings.

The top of the 10th, Ryan Fisher hit a home run to right field to give the Anteaters the 4-3 lead. The Hornets managed to get singles from freshman Blake Miller and junior Kyle Baskett in the bottom of the inning but were unsuccessful in plating either, which ended the game in a 4-3 loss.

The loss drops the Hornets record to 6-8 overall.

The Hornets return to action Tuesday with a home game against University of the Pacific at 2 p.m.
