Sacramento State kinesiology professor Doris Flores had no idea she would be honored as one of Sac State’s most influential women in front of students, faculty, and family members.

As part of the Women’s Herstory Month celebration, Sac State Housing and Residential Life hosted a “Women of Influence” event today at the American River Courtyard to honor students, faculty and staff who are considered to have a positive influence on the university.

With the faces of some of the most influential women in American and world history in the background, the recipients were awarded with plaques and flowers.

“This was a wonderful experience, and it was great to hear what these women are doing in the Sac State community,” Flores said.

During the 1970s, when Flores was training for her profession, she had to deal with the obstacles of being a female in the male-dominated field of athletics.

“There was a positive energy I got from my athletes,” Flores said. “That helped me become one of the first women who helped lead the way for women doing it now.”

Flores said teaching at Sac State is a rewarding experience because she is able to influence her students both in and out of the classroom.

“When I see these new students I have, both male and female, I see that they have the opportunities now that weren’t as prevalent when I was in school.” Flores said.

Resident advisor Danielle Cooley also didn’t expect to be presented an award.

“It feels amazing!” Cooley said. “It feels great to be recognized with all these great women.”

Cooley was nominated for her ability to balance school and personal life. She is responsible for making her freshman residents feel comfortable living away from home for the first time, which is something she considers important for her residents.

“I know that if I do good, then younger students will see that and be the best that they can be,”Cooley said.

Anthony Buono, assistant director of Housing and Residential Life, said the awarding ceremony would be remembered, not just by the recipients, but also by those they’ve influenced.

“People will remember this event for the rest of their lives,” Buono said. “It is a great way to recognize influential women in our community.”

Cassie Eskridge, residence life coordinator, said recognizing women in the Sac State community is appropriate, especially during times of economic troubles and furloughs.

“It was a huge morale booster to let these women know that they are still touching the lives of students, faculty and staff,” Eskridge said.
