Hornets’ bats quiet against Davis again

The Sacramento State baseball team lost its second straight game, in back-to-back days to the UC Davis Aggies with a final score of 13-2, Saturday at Dobbins Stadium in Davis.

The Aggies struck first, scoring in the bottom of the first. Justin Schafer reached on a Hornet error then Scott Lyman doubled to give UC Davis a pair of runners in scoring position with two-out. Eric Johnson came up and singled scoring both runners to give the Aggies the early 2-0 lead.

Not waiting long to make it a game, Sac State scored in the top of the second as Derrick Chung led the inning off with a double to left field and eventually came around to score on a single by Brent Hottman, cutting the lead to 2-1.

In the bottom of the second UC Davis got a run back when Daniel Cepin drove in another Aggie run on a ground out. Lyman doubled for the second time in the game in the bottom of the third, and scored later in the inning on a wild pitch, upping the Aggie lead to 4-1.The lead was shortened to 4-2 in the top of the forth when Justin Lamb hit his second home run of the series.

In the bottom-half of the fourth the lead was extended by the Aggies as they scored five runs, which all but sealed the game up.

UC Davis eventually went on to score four more runs, while the Hornets could only muster up two hits in the last five innings. The Aggies won in dominant fashion by a final score of 13-2.

The two teams will take it back to Sacramento for the final game in the series on today at Hornet Field at 1 p.m.
