Pedro Lupercio and Oscar Sandoval scored a goal apiece to highlight a Sacramento State attack that beat Oregon State 2-1 Monday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.

The Hornets were the aggressors most of the afternoon, especially down the stretch. With the match tied late in the game, junior Ryan Rhoads back heeled a pass to fellow junior Pedro Lupercio, who shot the ball past an outstretched Jason Mariner, the sophomore goalie for the Beavers, in the 84th minute.

“It was a great pass from Rhoads and I just put it in the goal,” Lupercio said.

On Thursday, the Hornet men began their season with a disappointing 3-0 loss to Saint Mary’s. On Monday, they reacted by dominating the Beavers on both sides of the ball for nearly 90 minutes and gaining their first victory over a Pac-10 foe since 1999. Sac State was constantly a step ahead of Oregon State, who was playing their third road game in under a week, and it showed in the scoring.

In the 18th minute, Sac State got on the scoreboard first when Oscar Sandoval used a bicycle kick to get the ball past Mariner from about 15 yards out.

After the goal, the Hornets kept applying the pressure.

With five minutes left in the opening half, Sac State was on the move again. A free kick by Josh Springer set up Eliot Ricks-Chambers, junior, for a header into the back of the net, but the goal was called back due to a delayed offside call keeping the lead at one.

Minutes later, however, the lead would be lost as the Beavers got an equalizing goal from freshman Collin Foster, whose shot deflected off a Hornet defender past senior goalie Matt McDougall, tying the game at one heading into the intermission.

In the second half, it was the Hornets’ defense and backup goalie Andrew Gangnuss stealing the show. The defense allowed only one shot on goal in the first half, but in the second half they stepped up and cleared the ball from the goalmouth numerous times. The freshman goalie ?” who was inserted into the lineup when McDougall’s leg began cramping ?” was equally impressive.

“Going in, I was really nervous,” Gangnuss said. “But now I feel that I can do it again and contribute to this team when they need me.”

In nearly 35 minutes of action, Gangnuss shook the nerves and recorded four saves, keeping the Hornets in the game despite many scoring opportunities in the second half for the Beavers.

“He’s no freshman on the field,” captain Utodi Madu said of Gangnuss. “He’s bright, talented and he can contribute to this team.”

The Hornets improved to 1-1-0 on the season while the Beavers dropped to 0-2-1. The Hornets’ will play Dayton on Friday at the Hornet Soccer Field at 4 p.m.
