ASI elections approachingThe 2007 Associate Student Inc. election is just a month away, and there are only two candidates eligible to run for positions on next year's student-body government.
Robert Linch, Jr. is running for president, while Aaron Pina is running for graduate director. ASI President Jesus Andrade said it is normal to only have so few candidates at this time.
In the end, he said he predicts about 20 to 30 candidates this year.
The election is set for Tuesday, April 24 at 8 a.m. and Wednesday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m.
Those interested in becoming the next ASI members can pick up an election packet from the Student Affairs Office in Lassen 2008. The packet includes information about eligibility and campaigning as well as rules and regulations.
The deadline for candidacy is Friday.
Requirements and qualifications can be found in ASI's bylaws, which can be found at http://www.asi.csus.edu/download/bylaws.doc.
Andrade said it takes commitment, teamwork and knowledge to become an ASI member.
"I would like for people to really know the position they want, and about issues on campus. They should be knowledgeable in general," he said.
Campaigning will begin at midnight on April 1.
Andrade said his campaigning experience was great.
"It was really time-consuming and stressful at times, but it was fun overall, because of strategies, talking with students and just showing your face," Andrade said.
Students can go to the following locations on campus to cast their votes: Library Quad; West Side Union Walkway; Riverfront Center Patio, Student Access Centers and the University Union. Voting can also take place online.
Coffee & conversation event approvedAndrade's proposal at the March 7 working board meeting to hold the Coffee and Conversation Event was approved Wednesday.
He said he wants students to use this opportunity of the event to ask the board any questions they have regarding the student body government and how it operates.
"Come and ask us about the faculty strike, 10 percent fee increases, different services and programs we offer." he said.
Andrade said ASI has many job and scholarship opportunities available for students that they may inquire about if they are interested.
"It's just really tough because of the culture of the campus," he said. "You can lead horses to the water, but you can't make them drink."
The event will take place on Sacramento State's Library Quad on at 8 a.m. on April 5.
