ASI Notebook: $1,000 donation for Tekle

In memory of the May 3 death of sophomore Kebret Tekle who was struck in the neck by a stray bullet outside of the Library Eats and Drinks nightclub, Alford and Andrade asked the board of directors to approve the donation of $1,000 from the board project funds.

The proposal includes three options in which the board can choose to direct the money toward: donating it to the Sacramento Achievement Foundation; donating it to Tekle’s sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha; or splitting the donation among the Sacramento Achievement Foundation and the scholarship, according to Alford and Andrade’s legislation.

The board of directors will vote to approve the legislation today.

Board compensation President Jesus Andrade brought back his legislation on May 10 that calls for board members to be compensated by scholarships instead of stipends, as they are paid currently.

Executive Director Pat Worley said ASI should change its compensation method for next year’s board of directors, as it will be out of compliance with its current method.

The board has two options: compensation by scholarship through financial aid or compensation by hourly payment.

Andrade originally proposed compensation by scholarship, because treatment as hourly paid employees would require board members to be supervised and will not allow them to be flexible with their hours.

But scholarship payments could affect financial aid that board members may receive.

The board has not determined how much taxes will be taken out of its check next year or which compensation method would better suit it as an organization.

Scholarship committeeVice President of Finance Tiffany Huang asked the board for its approval to create an ASI scholarship committee that will be responsible for providing up to 30 scholarships of $500 to eligible students during the academic year.

The committee will include five members: the vice president of finance, one ASI board member, one ASI student employee and two students at large.

If approved, the deadline for applications will be one month after each semester begins and about two weeks will be devoted to evaluate the applications. The awarded students will be acknowledged at ASI’s first meeting.

“Part of Associated Students Inc.’s mission is to provide experiential education, leadership opportunities and support services to our growing community. The ASI scholarship will help enforce this mission by providing additional financial support for the academic endeavors of the students selected,” Huang said.
