The Sacramento State men’s soccer team notched its first home victory of the year after a come-from-behind 2-1 overtime win over the Loyola Marymount Tigers Sunday at Hornet Field.

LMU (1-4-1) started fast and took up residence early on the Hornets’ side of the field. Sac State’s defense bent but didn’t break as they stopped the Tigers and pushed the ball into their territory.

The Hornets (2-3) twice found themselves in prime position to take the lead, but an off-target shot and an offsides call kept the game scoreless. The two teams split possessions until the 76th minute when LMU senior midfielder Sarkis Shaginian scored after a corner kick from teammate sophomore midfielder Rodrigo San Roman.

With time running out in regulation, Sac State freshman forward Justin Bedig passed the ball to sophomore defender Mac Harrington who fired the equalizing goal with less than a minute left in the game.

“I knew we were gonna get it,” Harrington said after his game-tying overhead kick. “We were pushing for it so hard.”

The Hornets started the overtime period with new life and something extra.

“We felt like we had the momentum going into overtime,” said Michael Linenberger, the Hornets head coach.

Sac State wasted little time riding that momentum as they quickly took the ball into scoring position.

The Tigers tightened up on defense, not allowing a corner kick by senior forward Paul Geyer to go in. Despite the defensive stand, the LMU defense fouled Sac State sophomore midfielder Matt Carnefix to set up the Hornets with a potential game-winning penalty kick. However, it wasn’t Carnefix who took the deciding shot.

“I looked around at a lot of the guys faces on the team, we have a young team and me being a fifth-year senior I thought it was my responsibility to take the ball and end the game,” said senior forward Trevor Jackson.

The ball darted right past the outstretched hand of senior goalkeeper Collin Partee for the game-winning score. The entire Sac State roster then ran and mobbed Jackson, jumping and celebrating. If Jackson was supposed to be nervous, nobody told him.

“I felt comfortable, my nerves were really under control,” Jackson said. “I just had the confidence and that’s really all you need.”

The victory brings the Hornets one game away from a .500 record, but the road ahead doesn’t get any easier.

“We have a tough trip this coming weekend up in Utah,” Linenberger said. “Utah Valley is very good, they’re a top-25 team. We know that’s going to be a tough matchup for us.”

Sac State will travel to play Utah Valley (3-1) Friday in Orem, Utah.
