Hornets remain winless after 14-7 loss at Weber State

Sacramento State ended up on the wrong end of a wild finish after losing to the Weber State Wildcats 14-7 at Stewart Stadium in Ogden, Utah on Saturday.

The Hornet defense — which allowed 515 yards of total offense — only gave up two touchdowns on the night, but as was the case last week against Fresno State, the offense failed to score more than seven points resulting in the program’s first 0-3 start since 2009.

Sac State and Weber State (1-2) were at a 7-7 stalemate for a majority of the game after Wildcats’ quarterback Jadrian Clark threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Drew Batchelor in answer of a previous 9-yard score from Hornet senior running back Demetrius Warren in the second quarter.

However, it appeared the Hornets would go into the locker room trailing 14-7 late in the first half after Clark connected with Batchelor again for what seemed to be a 51-yard touchdown, but due to a fumble at the goal line from Batchelor the score remained tied.

It seemed as if Sac State — which created three turnovers throughout the game — would hold the tie into overtime, but Clark scored his second touchdown of the game on a 10-yard quarterback keeper with 1:42 left in the fourth quarter.

The Hornet offense, led by junior quarterback Kolney Cassel, failed to respond in the allotted amount of time. Cassel, who finished the game 14-of-32 for 116 passing yards, replaced sophomore quarterback Nate Ketteringham after head coach Jody Sears decided a change was needed early in the first quarter.

“I’m obviously disappointed but compared to where we were after week one to week three we’ve come a long way,” Sears told Hornet Athletics. “I like the way our defense and special teams are playing right now. We just have to stay at it, stay consistent and be deliberate and diligent in our process because they’re willing.”

Sears will have one week to decide who his starter will be under center as Sac State travels to Idaho State looking to end their three-game road trip with the first victory of the season on Sept. 24 in Pocatello, Idaho.
