Overtime win sends Hornets to conference tournament

The Sacramento State women’s soccer team has qualified for the Big Sky Conference Tournament after defeating Portland State 2-1 Friday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Kayla Collins scored the golden goal in the 98th minute in overtime.
“Going into overtime I got this new burst of energy,” Collins said. “And I feel like everybody was just ready to just work it out and win.”
Junior defender Kassidy Kellogg had the game-wining assist.
The Hornets played a close game, and both teams tied for 16 shots. Sac State had the advantage for shots on goal 12-5. The Vikings had more shots in the first half 6-4, but the Hornets came out fighting the second half and had one more shot, 8-7.
Head coach Randy Dedini is proud of the way his team played.
“To end the regular season like this was incredible,” Dedini said. “The way we did it, the way we battled, so I am extremely happy for these girls.”
Portland State forward Morgan Matthews scored her first goal of the season in the 43rd minute.
Junior forward Adaurie Dayak scored her sixth goal on the season in the 62nd minute.
The Vikings’ goalkeeper had a game high 10 saves.
Sac State junior goalkeeper Molly McConnell had a season-high four saves.
“I just wanted to win,” McConnell said. “I could feel it, I knew we were going to win and everyone just had a really positive attitude about the game.”
Sac State had the advantage on corner kicks 11-3.
Dedini said the momentum was going their way and he knew his team would finish hard and get the win.
“I am just so happy that these girls got the job done,” Dedini said.
After winning on Friday, Sac State got the sixth seed and will play third seed Eastern Washington at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5.
