Preacher addresses students walking by, faith-driven debate follows

A preacher handing out pamphlets labeled The Koran Testimony set up a podium on the quad in front of the library and began addressing his ideals to people passing by around noon.

A crowd quickly gathered around to listen and participate with the preacher.

Discussion continued for more than an hour, with a select amount of individuals engaging in a discussion. One such student was third year sociology major Salvin Chahal.

“I don’t want someone telling me if I believe in religion, that religion is the answer, Chahal said. “In these discussions, especially about religion, there probably won’t be agreement and that’s completely ok.”

Third year criminal justice major Arthur Lewis said the engagement between the preacher and the bystanders like a competition of rebuttals.

“It seems like they’re just going back and forth with each other trying to up one another instead of expressing their own beliefs in a respectful way,” Lewis said.

Sacramento State policy dictates that free speech is protected on campus, but speakers can not block walkways. Sac State Police Chief Mark Iwasa said the area the preacher was in was questionable because it was not on the side of the walkway as people usually are.
