Sacramento State’s women soccer team (6-7-1, 2-2-1) tied Northern Arizona University (2-8-6, 1-1-2) 1-1 after two overtime sessions at Hornet Field on Friday.

Sac State forward Caitlin Pulver scored on a short shot in the 26th minute after a long pass from midfielder Victoria Ramirez from the far right side.

In the 25th minute, Northern Arizona forwards Jenna Somora and Sam Monahan broke through the midfield two-on-two before the defense could fully recover. Samora took a pass from Monahan and scored on a long shot for the first goal of the game.

Sixty-four minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods went by without another goal.

Sac State goalkeeper Savannah Abercrombie (seven saves), and Northern Arizona keeper Lauren Weaver (nine saves) kept both their teams in the game.

During the first half, Sac State was awarded eight corner kicks (nine total) and shot the ball 10 times (19 total). Northern Arizona had three shots in the first half and 10 total.

Sac State’s Jordan Carlberg shot nine times, seven times on goal.

“We just couldn’t put it away,” Carlberg said. “That was the problem I think. We definitely dominated. Myself, personally, I had two open shots. It just didn’t work out.”

The game got physical in the second half with seven foul calls against Northern Arizona and four against Sac State.

Sac State head coach Randy Dedini said he felt like the team played well enough to win.

“We were all over them and (just) really didn’t put them under,” Dedini said. “They kind of weathered the storm so to speak and I think it gave them a little bit of confidence, but (the game was) kind of a missed opportunity (to win).”

Pulver’s goal was her fourth of the season and she said that the team simply just needed to score another goal.

“We were so close so many times that we’ve just got to get on the end of the ball to get that second goal to finish the game,” Pulver said.

She said she thinks the played well as a team, but dropped the level of play in the second half.

After the tie finish, Sac State ranks fourth in the eight-team Big Sky Conference. Since the top four teams make the Conference tournament, the team would make it if the season ended today.

Dedini said even though Sac State is still in the mix, he isn’t happy about where it now stands.

“I think we’re playing better than other teams, but not quite getting the result,” Dedini said. “We just need to keep looking forward to the next game and try to get points.”

Sac State has three games remaining and plays Northern Colorado at home Sunday.
