Sac State student dies after being struck by car
March 31, 2011
Sacramento State student Arlene Sassedied early this morning after being struck by a car while riding her bike near campus.
Sasse, 22, was traveling southbound toward Carlson Drive at approximately 1:45 a.m. when she was struck by a vehicle driving westbound on J Street, said Sacramento Police Sgt. Norm Leong.
Leong said a 60-year-old woman hit Sasse and immediately pulled over. The driver said she did not see the bicyclist.
Sasse was rushed to the UC Davis Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.
Leong said the driver was likely within the speed limit; however, Sasse did not have reflectors on her bike, which may have contributed to the accident.
Leong said alcohol wasn’t a factor in the accident and investigators have no determined fault at this time.
According to Sasse’s Facebook page, she was a psychology major planning to graduate this year. She worked in the Sac State Testing Center as an office assistant and origami decoration coordinator.
