RANT: Be considerate when texting

Christina Li

There has been something going on lately that I’ve taken notice of, and it has really been bothering me. I don’t know about you, but I wish people would be more considerate about text messaging.

I’m not referring to the text messaging that goes on during classes, although it can be quite a distraction, but what I don’t understand is why people don’t pay attention to their surroundings while text messaging.

I would prefer it if people would not “accidentally” run into me because he or she was too busy texting. I should also mention that text messaging while walking causes a disruption in the flow of traffic. For some reason, people tend to walk slower when they text message and walk at the same time. If possible, I’d like to get to class without being stalled by a person walking too slowly because he or she is texting.

Text messaging without being aware of your surroundings can actually become very dangerous as well. For instance, texting while you’re crossing the street. Who knows? A car could hit you. Really, I’m being serious. Or, you could be too busy text messaging to look up and run into someone who is also too busy text messaging to look up.

So please to those of you walking texters out there, do yourself and others a favor by looking up from your phone every few seconds. It might just save your life.
