Long strokes at Natomas

Kyle Hampton

On a cool and calm Saturday morning, Lake Natomas played host to hundreds of coxswain, scullers and sweeps. To those familiar with the term “crew” this means it must be a rowing regatta.

During the Head of the American Regatta on Saturday Oct. 27, Sac State’s annual rowing competition put on by the Sac State Aquatic Center, Sac State women took sixth and ninth in the Collegiate Eight event in a field of 17 boats. With two boats competing in the Collegiate Eight event, boat A led by Erin DeGoede at coxswain and rowers Aimee Chenard, Kellie Cook, Chelsea Semrau, Krista Hill, Holly Hopkins, Michelle McMullen, Ashley Loucks and Ruthie Van Esso pushed themselves to a sixth place tie with UCLA at a time of 18:20; coming in only 40 seconds behind the fastest, Cal State Berkeley, which crossed the finish of the nearly three mile course in a blazing 17:40. Cal’s second boat, Gonzaga, Stanford, and UC Davis also finished before the Hornet women filling the second through fifth slots, accordingly. Among the 17 boat field was also the Hornet’s B boat comprised of coxswain Katie Bossenmaier and rowers Anne Morrison, Rachel Stewart, Lenore Meehan, Megan Riggs, Michelle Stern, Victoria Jackson, Joanne Stacy and Nicole Cavanagh who rowed to a 19:01 finish and ninth place tie with Long Beach State, only 41 seconds back from the Hornet A boat.

In the Novice Collegiate 8 class the Hornet women also finished sixth with a time of 21:08 and ahead of every non-Pac 10 contestant. Hornet men, who only competed as a novice 8 boat, also had an appetizing finish of 18:52, giving them fourth among a 13 boat field.

With only two regattas left for the season, Hornet rowing squads look to shorten their times and lengthen their strokes in an effort to oust teams at the Newport Beach Regatta in Newport and Head of the Lake Regatta in Seattle.
