Poreda baffles Hornet bats

University of San Francisco starter Aaron Poreda pitched a one hit gem Friday, shutting down Sacramento State to open the River City Classic at Hornet Field.

The junior ace was nearly perfect, allowing just one runner while striking out seven in eight innings of domination to lead the Dons to a 9-0 shutout win.

Sac State second baseman Patrick Cummins was the lone Hornet to reach base against Poreda. He led off the game by hitting a dribbler down the third base line that he just beat out on a close play at first. Poreda, who is now 2-1 with a 1.45 ERA, went on to retire the next 24 Hornets in order to get the lopsided victory.

“He’s a potential first round draft pick,” said Coach John Smith. “I knew that he was going to be tough to get to, I was hoping he’d go five to seven innings and we’d have a chance to get the pen.”

Hornets third baseman David Flores expressed that Poreda had great control of his pitches the entire game which allowed him to keep Sac State batters off balance.

“Whatever he wanted to do he did it, whether he wanted to throw a slider in the dirt or come back and throw a fastball inside, he did what he wanted,” Flores said.

One bright spot for the Hornets was the play of pitcher John Schlager. The senior gave the Hornets 5.1 innings of solid relief. At one point Schlager retired 13 consecutive Dons batters from the fourth through eighth innings, but got into trouble in the ninth allowing three runs to score.

Hornets starter Alvaro Orozco took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year. The Hornets now hold a 2-8 overall record. The victory put the Dons (6-5) just above the .500 mark.

Sac State will take on the Saint Mary’s Gaels at 2 p.m. Saturday and first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. for Sunday’s game against defending national champ Oregon State. Both games will be played at Hornet Field.
