When the Levees broke was a movie made by spike Lee in order to tell the story of what happened to New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

“There is a reason these people were affected,” Said Assistant Sociology Professor Paul Burke, “these were the poor people and could not afford to live anywhere else in New Orleans, while the more wealthy people were in area’s that did not flood,” Burke said.

Tiffany Smith who is a Junior Communications major said that she was very shocked about the things that she learned in the movie.

“We learned how this event affected all of us,” Smith said.

Smith Added that this movie made her think about what would happen in Sacramento Flooded especially since Sacramento’s flood risk is so high.

Professor Burke said that now when the weather turns bad here in Sacramento that he thinks about the horrible event that happened in New Orleans.

“Here at Sacramento the flooding is not a hot button issue but after Katrina now every time it rains how can you not think about that,” Burke said.Philip Malan can be reached at [email protected]
