‘Day in the Quad’ offers information, food

A plume of white barbecue smoke drew students to Wednesday’s “Day in the Quad,” an event organized by Associated Students Inc. and Student Life Services as a way to draw attention to their involvement on campus.

“The point of today’s event is to get students more information on the events [ASI and SLS organize] on campus,” senior Laura Cadranel said, a kinesiology major and co-advisor of Green Sting, a group that is a part of Student Life Services.

The event was the second “Day in the Quad” of the semester, and took place this afternoon in the Library Quad. The barbecue and the music provided by KSSU, Sacramento State’s student-run radio station, attracted students who had to collect signatures from ASI and Student Life Services’ tables, where they collected information on the organizations before they could collect a hamburger or hot dog.

“We’re here to try to attract attention to ASI and show our support for them,” said Bobby Soloril, the KSSU disc jockey, a freshman communications major.

Student Life and Services is an ASI program that consists of KSSU, Safe Rides, community service programs, Green Sting, and the Student Life and Services Center, which is located on the first floor of the University Union.

Davin Brown, Student Life and Services Director, said she hoped Wednesday’s event would provide exposure for the services they provide and upcoming events, such as a student-organized Thanksgiving food basket drive. Fraternities, sororities, clubs, and other student organizations can increase their eligibility for funding by participating in this drive and donating baskets of food to needy Sacramento families, Brown said.

Wednesday’s event seemed to be an effective way to increase exposure for ASI and Student Life Services.

“It gave me more information about programs that I didn’t know about,” said Jose Lopez, a junior majoring in geography.

“I think it’s good,” freshman music major Michael Smith said, “we got food and they’re also giving out information on their groups.”
