Fraternity, communications class organizing coat drive

Kappa Sigma is working with a communication studies group to organize a coat drive to bring a little warmth to the needy in Sacramento this winter.

The coat drive is an opportunity for people who can help to be involved with the community, said Gregory Carson, a liberal studies major and a member of the fraternity.

“The coat drive gives us a chance to give back to people that really need it, and the event will be going on until school gets out (at the end of the semester),” Carson said.

Ryan Moore, who is a part of the fraternity, said this was something they were doing for an assignment for Communications 105 and there were eight people in the group, but there is more to it than just doing it for class credit.

“This is an assignment for a class, but we were really motivated to try and help as many people as possible,” Moore said.

The drive will take any articles of clothing, but it is mostly asking for coats.

“This is a coat drive, but we are taking sweatshirts, but our emphasis is on getting jackets, especially with this time of the year, and it begging to get colder,” Moore said.

Drop-off sites are located at the first floor of Lassen Hall, the fifth floor of Mendocino Hall and the first floor of the University Union. The drop-off site at the Union was open only until Thursday due to food drives, Moore said.

Moore also said the United Volunteers of America will be receiving the coats.

Michelle Tyler, a psychology major, said she gave clothes away recently, but that she was going to look through her clothes to see if maybe she had more that she could give away.

“To be honest, I wasn’t aware Sac State was having a coat drive, and I think that it is a wonderful thing to do,” Tyler said.

Andrea Feaster, a government major, said she is impressed that college students are involved with the event and helping the people in need.

Tamra Pacada, the development associate for the Sacramento office for the Volunteers of America, said she was impressed by students from Sac State getting involved with helping people.

“I feel that it is just great how students from Sac State are putting in their time and effort to make a difference in the lives of people that are less fortunate, and especially this time of the year when it is getting colder and these people have such a need for warm clothing,” Pacada said.
