Softball could position itself for conference crown

The last two Pacific Coast Softball Conference champions have celebrated their titles on the infield at Shea Stadium. Kathy Strahan’s Hornets watched them rather than revelling themselves.

In 2004 it was Santa Clara riding the right arm of Jaime Forman-Lau to the title as Sac State entered the final weekend of the season tied with with the Broncos only to lose all four contests ?” part of a late season collapse in which they lost their final eight games. Last season Loyola Marymount used their bats to take the first two games of the final series to clinch when Sac State needed to win all four at home.

For the third consecutive season the Hornets end the PCSC regular season at home with a chance at the title. This time however, second-place Sac State (31-20, 10-6 PCSC) needs to win at least three games against Portland State (32-14, 12-1 PCSC) and get help from third place Loyola Marymount (27-19, 7-6 PCSC). If the Hornets ?” currently 3 1/2 games behind the Vikings, win three-of-four this weekend they would need Loyola Marymount to sweep Portland State in their three-game makeup series next weekend. Four Hornets wins this weekend would ensure that only two wins by the Lions would be necessary.

Both doubleheaders this weekend begin at noon at Shea Stadium. Prior to the first game on Saturday the program will honor its 1981 AIAW Division II national championship team and before Sunday’s games senior Danielle Ackland, Joanna O’Neill, Britany Crine, Gloria Toledo, Nikki Cinque and Lindy Winkler will be honored for their contributions to the program on Senior Day.
