It appears as though the rain has stopped falling for now but there’s something else that’s been falling from the sky lately ?” Sacramento State softball program records.

Senior centerfielder Lindy Winkler tripled twice in two games to claim the Hornets’ (17-10) longest hit streak ever and Sac State’s pitchers did not allow a run in a doubleheader sweep of Princeton on Wednesday at Shea Stadium, winning by scores of 5-0 and 4-0, respectively.

“It’s fun to watch,” said coach Kathy Strahan of her team, which has won 13 of its past 14 games, breaking several personal records in the process. “I enjoy watching this team play.”

Winkler tripled in the fifth inning of game one and the fourth of the nightcap surpassing Katie Cichy’s previous record 17-game hit streak. During the streak Winkler is hitting .483 with two homeruns, three triples, six doubles, eight walks, seven RBIs and 21 runs scored.

“I’m just trying to get hits,” Winkler said. “- I’m just hitting the ball where it’s pitched.”

Freshman pitcher Cassie Cervantes continued her string of dominance, tossing a one-hitter, ?” a bunt single in the first inning ?” walking three and striking out 12. Cervantes has now struck out 78 batters in her past five starts including breaking the seven-inning strikeout record against Iowa and the overall single-game strikeout record versus Syracuse last week.

“I struggled today,” Cervantes said jokingly.

Sac State got on the board early in game one smashed a screwball and sent it high into left field and over the fence for a two-run homer ?” her fifth of the season. Schloredt came up in the third with runners on again and laced a double to right-centerfield scoring Ashley Dawson and Amy Tompkins.

“I’ve been more selective lately,” Schloredt said of her recent offensive explosion after a rocky start.

Nikki Cinque threw the seventh shutout of her career in the nightcap allowing just three hits and four walks, striking out seven. The senior had a no-hitter through four and a third innings but Lindsay Motal laced a double to right-centerfield with one out in the fifth.

Sac State pounded out eight hits and four runs on Tigers (7-6) pitchers with senior infielders Britany Crine and Gloria Toledo being the catalysts. Crine went 3-for-3 with a triple, two doubles and three RBIs ?” all four runs the Hornets scored came from Crine’s bat ?” while Toledo went 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored.

Crine doubled in Toledo in the second, tripled her in and came around to score on an errant throw the fourth and doubled Toledo in again in the sixth.

The Hornets return to Shea Stadium at noon on Saturday to face Pacific in a doubleheader.
