Sophomore Lindsay Haupt had 16 kills and hit .538 with six blocks to lead the Sacramento State volleyball team to its first home victory of 2005, a four-game triumph over Nevada in the first round of the Sac State Invitational on Friday night.

The Hornets avenged a four-game loss to Nevada at Virginia Street Gym last year with the 3-1 (30-22, 33-35, 30-27, 30-25) win. Loyola Marymount swept Columbia in the tournamen’s opening match earlier in the night.

Senior setter Natalie Melcher started in place of freshman Rose Burke for the second-straight match and again produced, dishing out 50 assists and hitting .455 and adding 12 digs. Melcher set a balanced Hornet attack as the team hit a season-high .286 and two outside hitters and two middles ended up with double-figures in kills.

Junior outside hitter Shannon Roland matched Haupt’s 16 kills and added seven digs and four blocks, while senior middle Shannon Arts and junior outside hitter Atlee Hubbard notched 13 kills apiece. The 13 kills matched a career high for Arts as she hit an astronomical .545 to up her team-best hitting percentage to .295 for the season. Hubbard added 10 digs to record her fifth double-double in eight matches this year.

Two other Hornets tallied double figures in digs as junior libero Kristin Lutes had 16 and senior defensive specialist Mallory Hook had 11.

All-WAC middle hitter Salaia Salave’a led all players with 24 kills, hitting .429 and adding 15 kills. Wolf Pack Christine Harms libero also led all players in digs, notching 17.

The Hornets are now 3-5 while Nevada falls to 1-4. Sac State next plays against Columbia at 10 a.m. Saturday and completes the round-robin with the tournaments final match against undefeated Loyola Marymount at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Nevada will play Loyola Marymount 30 minutes after the Hornets’ match with Columbia and then play Loyola Marymount at 5 p.m. Saturday.
