Softball championship on the line

After taking two out of three games in a tripleheader at Portland State on Sunday, the Sacramento State softball team enters this weekend with a chance to win its first-ever Pacific Coast Softball Conference championship.

To accomplish that feat, the Hornets (27-20, 10-5, Pacific Coast) will need to sweep both doubleheaders this Saturday and Sunday against league-leading Loyola Marymount (32-16, 14-2 PCSC).

Both doubleheaders begin at noon.

Sac State has struggled in the first two years of the Pacific Coast Conference’s existence — posting a 1-7 record against the Lions.

This year’s Pacific Coast champion will receive an automatic bid to NCAA regionals, as the conference was awarded an automatic qualifier last fall.

The Hornets currently sit in second place, 2 1?2 games behind the Lions, as this weekend marks the final regular season games for each team.

“It should be an interesting battle, the way it should be,” Sac State coach Kathy Strahan said. “It would be a shame if things were already decided.”
