Election tactics contested, review date set for Friday
May 7, 2002
Candidates from the Associated Students, Inc. election have filed 10 grievances to the elections complaint committee in hopes of reconsideration for next year?s board of directors.
The committee will meet Friday in Lassen Hall from 1-2 p.m. to review the grievances and discuss possible options. The meeting is open to the public.
“There were no complaints last year or the year before,” ASI President Artemio Pimentel said. “I am hoping we can quickly look over, hear the complaints and dismiss them in an appropriate amount of time.”
Examples of some complaints filed are unauthorized use of food, using a candidate?s name in chalk graffiti and exceeding campaign expenditure limits.
Pimentel believes the voters expressed their will at the ballot box.
“The students spoke out on April 23 and 24, but now it?s up to the complaint committee to see if there was any misconduct or credible allegations,” Pimentel said.
Candidates have been disqualified before, according to Pimentel.
Former ASI President Sandra Schlemmer lost by four votes in the 1996 election to Gary Davis, but claimed her case to the committee and won.
“This is the first time in three years that we?ve had to meet with the complaint committee,” Pimentel said. “I doubt anything will happen; I think the committee will dismiss the complaints quickly this year and move on.”
