The Sacramento State women?s golf team took third place in last week?s Matador Spring Classic tournament hosted by Cal State University, Northridge.

Only three teams competed in the event held at Knollwood Country Club. Cal State Northridge took first place with a team score of 614 while California Polytechnic University finished second a score of 615, while the Hornets team total was 666.

Tracy Nichols had a two-round total of 162 and tied for 12th place. Kelley Carlson of Cal State Northridge took first place honors with a two round score of 152.

The Hornets did not give their best performance and were disappointed with the results of the tournament.

“We didn?t play very well. It wasn?t satisfying for me and it wasn?t satisfying for the team,” Hornet coach Rene Mondine said.

The CSUS golf team has been plagued with injuries and illness this season and look forward to regrouping for next year.

Now that regular season is over the Sacramento State golf team will be focusing on the Big Sky Championships. The Championships will be the Hornets final event of the year and Sac State is looking to end the season on a high note.

The Hornet men?s team was ranked No. 2 in the Big Sky coming into the season, while the women?s team was ranked No. 7.

The CSUS golf team is confident they are at a turning point and will bring Sac State golf back up to it?s potential next year.

“We hope to surprise some people,” Mondine said. “Every team has is ups and downs. Things are starting to come around. We know where we have to go and what we have to do to get there.”

The Hornets will take on Northern Arizona, Weber State, and others at the Big Sky Championships April 22-24 in St. George, Utah.
