Women’s soccer continue winning ways in Big Sky Conference
October 15, 2001
Sacramento State?s women?s soccer team was unstoppable this weekend at Hornet Field.
The Hornets played Portland State University on Friday, scoring three goals in the second half and taking a 4-1 win against the Vikings.
Junior forward Lisa Wrightsman had two goals and senior forward Lori Kerswell and Dana Dydasco each had one. The win against Portland State added another Big Sky Conference win, their third straight, to the Hornets? record.
Sac State was able to keep up its momentum for Sunday?s game against the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks.
The Hornets lost to the Lumberjacks last year, but they would not repeat that outcome this time around. The Hornets avenged last season?s defeat with a 2-1 win over the Lumberjacks.
“This was a good weekend for us,” head coach Sandra Asimos said after Sunday?s match. “Everyone came off the bench ready to make a difference.”
The Hornets? game with Northern Arizona started out slow, and at the end of the first half, both teams were scoreless.
The Hornets would not keep quiet for long as Lisa Wrightsman put one in the net in the 46th minute of the game. Sac State?s defense stayed strong and its offense kept up the pressure.
Senior midfielder Naomi Ennis got her first goal of the season in the 88th minute to make the score 2-0.
The Hornets almost had a shut out, but Northern Arizona managed to score in the last minute of the game. Sac State outshot the Lumberjacks 18-9 while sophomore Goalkeeper Amy Seely had two saves for the Hornets.
The 2-1 win gives the Hornets an overall record of 5-6-1, 3-0 in the Big Sky Conference. With five games left in the season, three of them conference matches, the Hornets are focusing on their overall record.
“We want to get the most wins possible,” Asimos said. “We are focusing on us and trying to improve each game.”
The Hornets will face the University of Montana Grizzlies (4-6-0) this Friday in Missoula, Mont.
