Really happy to hear your defense of country music, which really needs no defense, save from the ignorant. The whole argument about country music has occurred at least three times in my lifetime: the 70s (eagles, ronstadt, byrds), the 80s (lone justice, long ryders, x) and the whole alt-country movement of the 90s (uncle Tupelo, son volt, Wilco, whiskeytown).
I was hoping to hear some of these names mentioned, and I hope you’ll look them up, as they’ve really opened up the genre and the discussion. Love Kacey, too, and Miranda (fuck Blake!)
As for women in country, i hope you know Loretta, Tammy, Bobbi Gentry and Dusty Springfield, too. Dusty in Memphis isn’t exactly country, but it’s one of the great albums ever. And the movie Coal Miner’s Daughter is required viewing. Closer to your age—please listen to Neko Case (Furnace Room Lullaby for starters).
Also listen to the podcast Cocaine and Rhinestones and watch Ken Burns’s PBS documentary. (Sorry if I’m sounding like an old gasbag.)
I realize this was you guys expressing your love and nostalgia for country, but it really is a great wide world of thoughtful, crazy, wild, tender music that is as varied as any /rock/metal and as psychotic as punk.
Keep listening!
