Sac State needs to cater to students who eat a later breakfast

Sociology senior Elizabeth Bertelson receives her food at Gordito Burrito in the University Union on Thursday April 23, 2015.

It’s a half hour until noon. You have some time before you start class and you have a craving for a hearty breakfast that will keep you running until your next gap of free time and then you think, “Chorizo.”

There is no way anyone can ever go wrong with Mexican food in the morning, especially if it’s a plate of sausage and eggs. That means it is time for some Gordito Burrito, Sacramento State’s only source of Hispanic cuisine.

Unfortunately, it’s only after waiting for your turn in line and asking with a skip in your step and a grin shaped like the letter “U” for that sacred meal do you receive the heart-stopping news that their only item that comes with chorizo is not served after 10:30 a.m.

Why? Such a restricting time frame benefits only the early birds who either have work or class when the sun is still groggy. What about the people still looking for a legitimate breakfast after 10:30 a.m.? Where are you going to send them, Panda Express? Good luck digesting that for the next few hours.

Anyone who frequents the University Union for food could notice the lack of variety when it comes to breakfast foods. The Buzz has their breakfast panini, and it’s probable that someone has gotten a salad before lunch at Good Eats. Take out those two restaurants and you’re left with deep-fried fast food.

Sac State needs more breakfast options with an actual breakfast vibe. Everything about the choice of food on campus screams lunch and dinner, but breakfast has such little prominence it’s saddening because it’s not called the most important meal of the day for no reason.

There is a problem more grave on campus than class impaction and lack of classes. This problem could very well affect the performance of all students at Sac State regardless of major and age. A problem so far-reaching, it’s going to require all the skills and moxy of our new campus president to resolve. Extending the time for Gordito Burrito’s breakfast chorizo will save students from poorly nourished meals and indigestion problems.
