Students advance to regional College Bowl Tournament

Current events, history, literature and word origins were just a few of the categories that about 30 students were quizzed on in the 2006 Sacramento State College Bowl Tourney.

These students met Friday at Hinde Auditorium. Dean Sorensen, program director of the University Union, Don Tucker, the assistant director of operations in the Union, and Steve Forseth, the custodial services manager of the Union moderated the event.

Six teams underwent a double-elimination tournament, with seven-minute half-rounds. Questions, such as, “Which biblical patriarch cultivated a vineyard, got drunk and lied down on the ground naked until his sons covered him?”

“It’s just fun to answer random questions and to see how smart you are,” said Mike Petrillo, a sophomore mathematics major. His team, the Terrible White Albino Turkeys, won one round but had to leave for rugby practice.

Several rounds were close, with 10 points separating the winners and losers of the round. But after four hours of question after question, a team calling themselves the TNTs defeated five other teams.

Sophomore Theodora Scolarikis, senior Nate Gilmore and graduate student Thomas Williams will go to the regional College Bowl Tourney at Fresno State in February. They will be going against other colleges in California, Nevada, Hawaii and Guam, Sorensen said.

Sorensen said Sacramento State has had previous College Bowl Tourney teams reach fifth place in the regionals. However, last year’s participants graduated, leaving this year with novices, except for Williams, who attended the regionals last year.

Scolarikis, Gilmore and Williams, along with advancing in the tournament, also won free tickets to upcoming UNIQUE shows.
