Rec Sports employees prepare for new year
January 6, 2007
Student Activities began training both new and experienced student employees for the fall and spring semesters Thursday.
The group of about 30 students had training exercises in customer service and One Card policies at sports events.
The students were certified in CPR and first aid, according to senior criminal justice major Sean Basso, who is the interim recreation sports adviser. He said that the new employees will also be trained in leadership qualities.
The group was instructed how to deal with natural disasters, sports injuries and fights. One of the policies that Ken Morton, the Recreation Sports coordinator, stressed was anyone that is proven to be involved in a fight can be thrown out either for a couple of months, a semester or forever.
Morton told the group that the work that they do this year will prepare them for the yet-to-be-built Spanos Sports and Recreation Center. He said that as long as there are referees, lifeguards and other employees working with recreation sports, sports teams will survive to use the Center.
Morton also informed the group of new occurrences this semester. The weight room will have a personal trainer once a week for students free of charge.
Also he said that ice hockey will be available again to students this semester.
Ryan McCallum, the assistant coordinator, stressed to the group that the main goal of recreation sports is “to just have fun.”
