College Democrats

By now you’re well aware the unprecedented situation Sac State students find themselves in, and it’s only getting worse. On tap for 2011-2012 is a $500 million reduction in state funding to the CSU, another 10-percent tuition hike, cuts to programs and classes and so on and so on. California college students have never had it worse. The days of $20-per unit tuition, zero college loans, and a job market starved for educated young professionals have long since passed us.

Like many of you, the College Democrats at Sacramento State have had enough. We’ve had enough of the fee hikes, enough of the empty rhetoric, enough of the ASI representatives who continuously vote against student interests.

On April 10th, we interviewed candidates from all three ASI slates to vet their commitment as student advocates. We pushed them on issues regarding student fees, fair access for undocumented students and environmental sustainability on campus.

We are proud to endorse the following candidates who overwhelmingly meet our standards as exceptional student advocates, and we urge you to support them – and in turn support your interests – come the April 26th and 27th ASI Board elections.

Vice President Academic Affairs – Monica Cortez

Monica’s history as a student advocate is incredibly impressive. Her involvement with CAMP and EOP as well as other clubs and organizations on campus have made her an unequalled student advocate. We have the utmost confidence that she will represent students with an unwavering tenacity during her time on the Board.

Vice President University Affairs – Liz Redford

Liz is a tireless student advocate who is known across campus for her myriad leadership roles and organizing skills. Whether it’s registering voters, advocating for women and minorities or pushing for better student advocacy on campus, Liz stands out among her peers.

Director of Arts and Letters – John Judge

John is simply the best representative for the College of Arts and Letters in the race. He’s involved himself heavily in a wide array of organizations and clubs within the organization and is well-known as a consummate leader by his peers. He already is a fantastic student advocate and will continue to be so as an elected ASI board member.

Director of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies  – George Cordero

George has a strong student advocate streak indicated by his previous volunteer efforts with the Associated Students’ Lobby Corps. George is a fighter for even the most underrepresented students on campus. In addition to his work with Lobby Corps, George has shown his commitment to fine-tuning his skills to advocate for students through his coursework. He will be a valuable asset to the students of the College of SSIS.

Director of Undeclared – Nicholas Meyer

Nick, simply put, has a great future ahead of him as a student advocate. His answers in the interview process were among the strongest of all the candidates regardless of their respective race. Thoughtful and pragmatic, Nick is an ideal ASI board member that brings a wealth of talent to the table.
