The friendly confines of Lake Natoma were not so friendly to the Sacramento State rowing team this weekend, as they won only three of 11 races at the Lake Natoma Invitational this weekend.

Sac State and No. 2 nationally-ranked Cal co-hosted the invite, a two-day meet that hosted some of the best teams in the nation. Along with Cal, No. 1 Brown, No. 7 Stanford, No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 15 Gonzaga, No. 16 Iowa and No. 18 Notre Dame were the other ranked teams at the invite. Sac State and Loyola Marymount were the only unranked teams at the invite.

In the Saturday morning sessions, Sac State’s varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four finished third in each race behind Stanford and Gonzaga, with times of 6:52.63, 7:00.92 and 8:09.05 respectively. The Hornets’ second varsity four, with sophomore Leanne Krautheim as coxswain, raced in a three-team heat with Cal and Iowa, finishing with a time of 7:58.51 to qualify for the afternoon petite final.

Saturday afternoon didn’t fare that much better for Sac State, as the varsity four (8:09.05), second varsity eight (7:08.32) and varsity eight (6:57.33) finished third behind Brown and Iowa. In the first afternoon heat, Sac State’s third varsity eight A team finished in third behind Cal’s 3V and 4V teams, with a time of 7:17.59. The second heat, with Sac State’s third varsity eight B team, finished third behind Wisconsin and Stanford, with a time of 8:01.22.

The final race of the day, the petite final, saw Sac State’s second varsity four finish third with a time of 8:11.23, their worst time posted on Saturday.

Sunday morning saw the final races of the invite take place, and Sac State fared better in the early sessions.

In the first race of the morning, the third varsity eight petite final, the Sac State 3V and 4V teams finished second and third, respectively, behind Stanford, with times of 7:19.10 and 7:25.40. In the first varsity four, Sac State won its first race of the invite, beating Loyola Marymount, with a time of 7:39.21.

The other two races Sac State won were the second varsity eight and first varsity eight against Loyola Marymount, with times of 6:51.34 and 6:39.69.

Sac State’s next event is the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Invite at Lake Natoma, which will take place on April 30 and May 1 at the Sac State Aquatic Center.
