Sacramento State is celebrating Women’s “HerStory” for the entire month of March. Wednesday will explore “Woman Love” in the form of a pop-up art show in collaboration with the local art and culture community.

Presented by the Sol Collective in Sacramento and the Women’s Resource Center on campus, the Creative Queens Pop-Up Art Show exhibition will center around the theme of women and their contributions to history.

Indiana Womack, program coordinator at the WRC said this is an important event for Women’s “HerStory” Month. “We are trying to show stories of real women,” Womack said.

“We are breaking away from fairytales,” Womack says, in regards to common stereotypes.

The event will host several artists from the Creative Queens Art Group, a workshop developed for women and transgender identifying individuals. Paintings, mixed media pieces and sculptures will be showcased. Some pieces will be available for purchasing, Womack said.

Creative Queens is a product of the Sol Collection art space in Sacramento, devoted to art, activism and and culture, their website reads.

Salvin Chahal, senior sociology major, is the community organizer for Sol Collective. Chahal says the space hosts workshops, art exhibits, events and festivals for the community. “A lot of them are free or available with a small donation,” Chahal said.

In 2015, Capital Public Radio reported that Sol Collective offers spaces for Black Lives Matter, Sacramento Activist School and Feminist Alliance to meet regularly as well.

The event will be presented in the Multi-Cultural Center in Library 1010 from 5-7 p.m. The reception is at 5:30 p.m., followed by a panel discussion from several artists.

“I want to see a world with more recognition for women in the arts and STEM [Science, technology, engineering and mathematics,]” Womack said.
