ASI to reallocate scholarship funds

Associated Students, Inc. discussed the reallocation of more than $2,000 remaining from a director’s scholarship on Wednesday, March 16.

After Aryn Fields, the former director of social sciences and interdisciplinary studies, was appointed as the vice president of finance by the ASI board members, $2,918 remains from the director of SSIS scholarship for ASI to spend.

The board members made various recommendations on how to distribute the funds.

Fields recommended the funds be used to increase the Directors Scholarships next year. The Directors Scholarships are given to one student from each college, and to one undeclared and graduate student, in the amount of $250 each spring. Fields recommended the scholarship be increased to $500.

“I believe that $250 is unappealing to students to apply for,” Fields said. “Students are so busy with classes and work that they might not see the benefit of taking part of their time to apply for a scholarship for $250. That is some of the feedback I got from promoting the scholarship.”

Tucker Caruso, vice president of academic affairs, stressed the funds should be used this semester.

“I think it should be used now, not later,” Caruso said.

John Meidinger, director of graduate studies, recommended the funds go to students in the college of SSIS instead.

“It is an SSIS director scholarship, let’s identify students who need it in that college,” Meidinger said.

Other ideas from the board included using the funds for kickoff events and spending it on the Food Pantry.

Executive Vice President Andrea Salas will present the recommendations to President Melissa Bardo, who was not present at Wednesday’s meeting, before the board votes on how to spend the money.

ASI also approved of spending $1,500 from their strategic priority funds to install a new water bottle refill station at the River Front Center.

“A lot of students who spend time over on that side of the campus have no refill station,” Fields said. “So, having at least one refill station would be a great service that we provide for those students.”
