President Robert Nelsen released an email Wednesday afternoon stating that his office was notified of “hate speech” directed toward the Sacramento State Muslim community.

It was a written message found near the University Union, said Ed Mills, vice president for Student Affairs. The university is not releasing the exact location or nature of the writing.

This is an incident the university will not tolerate, and that is why the president responded so promptly, Mills said.

According to Sac State Chief of Police Mark Iwasa, no actual crime has occurred but the department is documenting the incident.

“[It] doesn’t quite qualify as vandalism,” Iwasa said. “It is certainly offensive, but not criminal at this point.”

It is unlikely criminal charges could stem from todays event unless behaviors escalate, Iwasa said. The Office for Equal Opportunity is now handling further investigation.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
